THE HOLOCAUST
The Holocaust
An interesting thing that happened during World War II was the holocaust. The Holocaust was a major effect on the cause of World War II. The Holocaust was the systematic persecution and murder of six million Jews by the Nazi regime. “Holocaust” comes from the greek origin meaning “sacrifice by fire”. Adolf Hitler had been involved in World War I as a soldier on the German side , but was truly upset with the outcome when the war was over. When Germany had lost Hitler believed it was because of the Jews. Hitler joined the National Socialist German Party or known to English speakers as the Nazi’s after the war. In January of 1933 Adolf was named Chancellor of Germany. After the death of President Paul von Hindenburg in 1934 Hitler appointed himself as being Germany’s Supreme Ruler. When he became supreme ruler he wanted to wipe out the Jewish population.
Nazi Soldiers lined up for commands
NaziNaNaNajse3dj2ede3cx4xThe time of the killing of the Jews by Hitler was called the Holocaust. During the holocaust Adolf had made the jewish people wear the Star of David so the Nazi soldiers knew that they were Jewish. In 1939 Germany invaded Poland and moved Polish Jews into the ghetto giving their properties to Germans, which was the start of the holocaust. In the spring and summer of 1940, the German army had expanded Hitler’s goal into Europe and conquered Denmark, Norway, Belgium, Luxembourg, France, and the Netherlands. The army had gotten thousands of Jews from all over the continent and transported them to the Polish ghettos. Beginning in late 1941, the Germans began to load trucks of Jews from the ghettos and brought them to concentration camps, where many were killed, starting with the people they felt were the least useful: the sick, the old and weak, and the very young. Adolf Hitler tried to keep these camps a secret but it later came out to other countries what he was doing from eyewitnesses. Many did not help because they were more focused on winning the war at hand.
The Holocaust lasted for 12 years, until 1945. In January of 1945, Auschwitz was liberated. Auschwitz was the biggest camp in the Nazi territory and it was also the one where the most deaths occurred. The liberation of this camp was a major milestone in the end of the Holocaust. When allied forces invaded Germany in 1945, Hitler knew he had been defeated. Whether from feeling the fear of punishment Adolf Hitler committed suicide before the allies had the chance to capture him. That year thousands of Nazi soldiers had killed themselves as well. They believed it was easier than being captured and punished for what they had done. Although, hundreds more were caught and punished for their involvement in the holocaust.
